AMD revealed the Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics card, a powerful alternative to Nvidia for home AI systems

AMD has officially unveiled the new Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics gas pedal — a graphics card designed specifically for AI tasks and working with large language models (LLMs). The new product will be a competitor to the Nvidia RTX 5090, offering impressive performance at nearly half the power consumption and a more affordable price — $1,299.
The R9700 is a new graphics card designed specifically for AI and large language modeling (LLM) tasks.
The GPU market is now almost entirely under Nvidia’s control, but AMD is determined to regain some of the attention of professionals and enthusiasts. The Radeon AI PRO R9700 is based on the RDNA 4 — the same architecture used in the RX 9000 series of gaming graphics cards. The card received 64 ray tracing units (Ray Accelerators), 128 AI gas pedals, 4,096 stream processors and 64 compute units. Peak performance in FP32 operations reaches 47.8 teraflops at a maximum frequency of 2,920 MHz.

The graphics card features 32GB of GDDR6 video memory with 640GB/s of bandwidth and a heat package of 300W — exactly half that of the RTX 5090. At the same time, the Radeon AI PRO R9700 offers support for FP8, INT8 and INT4 formats, making it suitable for quantized models and local inference tasks.
For home labs and small servers, this is especially important — the graphics card only needs a 750W power supply, making it suitable for compact systems without expensive server hardware. Power is supplied via a single 12V-2×6 connector, so users just need to make sure the connection is secure.

Compared to previous AMD professional solutions such as the Radeon PRO W6800, the new card offers noticeably higher bandwidth, improved compute support, and performance gains — with only a 50W increase in power consumption.

AMD will begin selling the Radeon AI PRO R9700 on Monday, October 27, priced at $1,299. For those looking for a power-efficient and open solution for artificial intelligence or LLM tasks, this could be a great alternative to Nvidia’s expensive solutions.
