Nintendo Switch 2 – 4K gaming, new controllers and a strong launch catalog of games

Nintendo Switch 2 is set to be one of the most anticipated gaming releases of the year, continuing the success of the original Switch. Today, the manufacturer finally revealed key details about the console at a special Nintendo Direct event.

Bigger screen, more power, more memory

The console gets a 7.9-inch HD LCD screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. While many were expecting OLED, the display now supports HDR, which will improve picture quality.

The Dock Station Switch 2 is capable of delivering 4K 60fps on compatible screens. It also supports upscaling of games and has an optional cooling system.

Internal storage has increased to 256GB, but only MicroSD Express is now supported, and cards from the original Switch are not compatible. The new memory will make games load faster.

Redesign controllers and new features

The new Joy-Con attach to the console with magnets and feature an improved gyroscope. The sticks are larger, and the controllers themselves now work like computer mice. This is especially important for games like Civilization VII and Metroid Prime 4.

Nintendo also introduced a USB-C camera for new game mechanics and online interactions. For example, Mario Party Jamboree will feature mini-games with items balancing on your head, and online games will allow you to see players’ faces next to their characters.

The console has also gotten a microphone for voice chat and game mechanics, and the audio system now supports 3D sound.
