MediaTek unveiled Kompanio Ultra, a powerful AI chip for new Chromebooks

MediaTek is preparing to revolutionize the Chromebook world by introducing Kompanio Ultra, a new 3nm SoC with a focus on artificial intelligence. While Chromebooks have traditionally been considered energy efficient but not the most powerful laptops, this chip is set to change that.

Kompanio Ultra is positioned as the best solution for future Chromebook Plus. There have been no official announcements of the new models yet, but the appearance of a flagship AI chip could hint at the imminent launch of the new devices.

The chipset uses an “all-big-core” architecture consisting of 8 Arm Cortex-X925 cores, with no low-power auxiliary blocks. This delivers up to 18% performance gain with twice the power consumption of competitors.

One of the main benefits of the Kompanio Ultra is the 8th generation NPU, delivering 50 TOPS of AI performance. The chip is designed to work with Google Gemini, which is gradually replacing Google Assistant in the ChromeOS ecosystem.

As Ii features are integrated into Google Workspace, Chromebooks with Kompanio Ultra will be able to handle the new features without sacrificing speed or autonomy.

The new SoC can support 60 fps in top Android games and handle two external 4K displays simultaneously. It’s also got Wi-Fi 7, which will make working with cloud services even faster.

Chromebooks based on the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra will be available in the coming months. So far, MediaTek hasn’t revealed which brands will be the first to introduce laptops with the new chip, but it’s likely to be Acer, ASUS, and Lenovo.
