Long-awaited remaster arrives on PlayStation 5
Sony’s State of Play on Thursday revealed several upcoming Konami releases. The highlight was the announcement of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 2, which finally brings the only game in the series not yet available on current-gen consoles – Metal Gear Solid 4.
This collection bundles remasters of two previously released games: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It’s a huge moment for Metal Gear fans who have been waiting for MGS4 to make the jump to modern hardware. Originally launched for PS3 in 2008, it remains the only main franchise entry Konami never remastered or re-released until now.
The collection drops on August 27 and is available for pre-order now on the PSN Store for $50. PlayStation 5 is currently the only confirmed platform, but PC and Xbox Series X|S versions could come later if Sony holds just a timed exclusive window-something we’ve seen before with Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth.
Remaster, not a remake
The collection is a remaster of both games rather than full remakes. Each title will feature enhanced resolution, smoother frame rates, and customizable controls. There might also be additional quality-of-life improvements, although those details haven’t been confirmed yet.
Beyond the two main games, the collection packs in script books and master books for each title, plus a digital soundtrack. A notable addition is a third, smaller game – Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Originally released on Game Boy Color in 2000, Ghost Babel was a sequel to Konami’s Metal Gear Solid from two years prior on PlayStation. Using the same top-down style graphics as the original Metal Gear titles on NES and MSX2, the game is not officially part of the Metal Gear canon.
What are Metal Gear Solid 4 and Peace Walker about?
Metal Gear Solid 4 is the final chapter in the Metal Gear Solid storyline, where Solid Snake undertakes his last mission to finally dismantle the Patriots – the mysterious organization behind the events of previous games.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker picks up after Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Here, Snake – or rather Big Boss – has established his own military faction in Colombia. While building his army, Big Boss is called upon to combat a rising military force that’s developing its own nuclear tank.
