Sony drops two ‘Spider-Noir’ trailers starring Nicolas Cage

Sony has released two trailers for the upcoming series Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage – one in full color and the other in classic black and white. The show is set to premiere on MGM+ and Prime Video on May 27.

  • The main character is named Ben Reilly, not Peter Parker
  • Brendan Gleeson will play the villain Silvermane
  • The show’s tagline: “No power – no responsibility”

From animated cult hit to live-action series

Spider-Noir is a gritty detective version of Spider-Man, set in 1930s New York’s shadowy underworld. The character originally appeared in the late 2000s Marvel Noir comics, which reimagined popular superheroes in a noir style – including characters like Wolverine and Daredevil alongside Spider-Man.

Spider-Noir is the only character from that universe to make it to the screen so far – appearing as a supporting figure in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel. Nicolas Cage voiced the character, and his performance was a fan favorite, prompting Sony to greenlight a full live-action series focused on him. And let’s face it, Cage is famously hard to say no to.

A noir parody rather than a serious detective story

The series will hit MGM+ and Prime Video on May 27. The lead is Ben Reilly – famously known in comics as the Scarlet Spider and a clone of Peter Parker – rather than the traditional Peter Parker. The antagonist, crime boss Silvermane, will be brought to life by Brendan Gleeson.

Judging by the trailers, this won’t be a straight-faced noir drama, but more of a playful parody. The tagline sums it up nicely: “No power – no responsibility.” Sony is emphasizing the 1930s detective vibe with two distinct trailers – one in vivid color, the other in monochrome black and white.
