Rooftops&Alleys’ indie parkour game is quickly gaining popularity

Rooftops & Alleys has potential as a Pro Skater, but for parkour fans.

The recent Steam release from the single-player indie developer has become really popular, racking up nearly a thousand positive reviews since going into early access on May 21. Rooftops & Alleys: The Parkour Game — is a sports game centered entirely around the parkour and freerunning experience, meaning it’s neither a shooter nor a hooded stabbing game.

No, it’s not a shooter or a hooded stabbing game.

Rooftops & Alleys combines the discipline of parkour, allowing you to jump and explore your surroundings, try tricks and chase challenging stunts, with the more competitive practice of freerunning, offering medal time trials and challenging stunts on its maps. It’s also a true multi-button game, requiring you to use the controls to jump, land, sprint, mantle and bounce. According to the developer, there’s «no «hold down the button to park»» mentality here.

Here’s the thing.

In my opinion, parkour is closest to games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater in terms of its layout, gameplay and ethics, with an original, very laid-back and relevant to our times drum and bass soundtrack.

The Early Access release features three maps where you can perform parkour and freerunning stunts, as well as a stunt chain and scoring system for the points you can score, and stunt challenges and timed courses. The game also features dynamic weather (which you can change at will) and a little character customization, as well as a very stylish slo-mo button for shooting video.

I’ll also mention one very interesting feature: you can drop a «session marker» anywhere, allowing you to return to that spot at any time or if you fail to fall. This makes it very easy to do tricks with lots of customization and takes the pressure off after failing to do something difficult. You can also turn into a pigeon and fly, making it easy to explore maps and take routes.
