Viwoods unveiled the first E Ink reader with Android 16

Viwoods has released its new AiPaper Reader, making it the world’s first E Ink screen device to run Android 16. While the combination of e-paper and Android is not new, it was Viwoods that first implemented it with the latest version of Google’s operating system. This shows the company’s commitment to providing faster updates and making e-books part of a unified Android ecosystem.

AiPaper Reader features a 6.13-inch Carta 1300 display with a pixel density of 300 ppi. The screen offers higher contrast and faster page changes than previous generations of panels. The device is just 6.7mm thick and weighs 138g — it feels more like a compact smartphone than a tablet, making it comfortable for everyday use.

Inside is Android 16, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The reader supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and 4G LTE. A 2580 mAh battery is responsible for battery life, which is enough for long hours of use thanks to the energy efficiency of the E Ink display. There’s a separate AI call button on the case — which can be pressed to instantly launch ChatGPT, Gemini or DeepSeek and ask a question by voice.
The majority of readers still run older versions of Android or closed ecosystems. Moving to Android 16 gives Viwoods access to a wider selection of apps, modern security measures, and possibly the Google Play store right «out of the box». That said, the device doesn’t support a stylus — the company isn’t trying to compete with note-taking models like the Remarkable PaperPro Move, focusing on pure reading. It’s not yet known how much of the Android 16 interface is adapted to the monochrome screen.
