Sony unveiled the FX2 movie camera with a full-frame sensor

Sony has introduced the FX2 (model ILME-FX2), a fresh model in its Cinema Line lineup. The camera is aimed at independent filmmakers and small crews who want professional tools in a compact body. The FX2 inherits the design from the FX3 and FX30, but has received important improvements based on user feedback.
Full-frame sensor, high light sensitivity and wide dynamic range
The FX2 features a 33-megapixel full-frame Exmor R sensor with backside illumination. It offers over 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 mode and offers two base ISOs, 800 and 4000. Maximum sensitivity reaches ISO 102400, making the camera suitable for low-light shooting.

Supports 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra recording with formats like XAVC SI DCI 4K at 24p. Also available is 4K shooting up to 60fps and Full HD up to 120fps for slow motion. Uploading up to 16 custom LUT files and using Cine EI, Cine EI Quick and Flexible ISO modes for logging is supported.

Cinematic color and compact body
The camera features a preset S-Cinetone profile and a host of Creative Look settings. There’s also support for anamorphic optics at 1.3x and 2.0x for correct previews.
Dimensions are 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm and weight is about 679 g. The FX2 offers three built-in mounting points, a removable top handle, and an internal fan cooling system that lets you record 4K 60p for up to 13 hours without overheating.

Autofocus, stabilization and shooting convenience
The FX2 supports real-time tracking of people, animals, birds, cars and even insects. AF Assist, focus-breezing compensation, transition speed and AF sensitivity adjustments are also available. Active and Dynamic Active Modes stabilization ensures steady handheld shooting. Auto Framing and Framing Stabilizer help when mounted on a tripod.
Screen, Viewfinder and Controls
The camera has a new 3.68 million-dot tilting OLED viewfinder and a 3-inch rotary touchscreen. The camera’s interface automatically adapts to vertical shooting. Also available is the BIG6 screen, which displays key parameters: FPS, ISO, shutter speed, white balance, selected profile and aperture.
The FX2 offers a Log Shooting mode for full-resolution 33 MP photos. The MOVIE/STILL selector lets you instantly switch between stills and video, and a long press of the Fn button gives you quick access to the modes.





Audio, interfaces and price
The kit version with knob offers two XLR/TRS ports and a 3.5mm audio input for recording 4-channel 24-bit audio. Video is output via HDMI Type-A (4K 60p, 4:2:2 10-bit and 16-bit RAW). The camera also features dual-band Wi-Fi, USB-C (10Gbps with Power Delivery support) and network connectivity via an adapter. USB and LAN streaming is supported.
