Sennheiser launches wired USB-C headphones CX 80U and HD 400U with no batteries

Sennheiser has unveiled two new wired headphones with USB-C connectors aimed at users who want to ditch built-in lithium-ion batteries, which are often tricky to recycle. Both models feature a U-shaped sound signature with an emphasis on bass and come equipped with built-in mics for calls.

The lineup includes the in-ear CX 80U and the over-ear HD 400U, designed for smartphones and other devices with USB-C ports. These headphones are wired counterparts to the 3.5mm jack versions — the CX 80S and HD 400S. Both support digital audio playback up to 24-bit/96kHz, sidestepping the compression typically associated with Bluetooth codecs like SBC or AAC.

Both models are tuned with a U-shaped frequency response that highlights deep bass. According to Sennheiser, the HD 400U delivers a warmer sound, while the CX 80U offers a more neutral profile.

The HD 400U covers a frequency range of 18 Hz to 20 kHz, with a maximum sound pressure level of 120 dB SPL and a total harmonic distortion under 0.5%. Meanwhile, the CX 80U spans from 17 Hz to 20 kHz, maxes out at 119 dB SPL, and also keeps distortion below 0.5%.

Both headphones include an integrated MEMS microphone located on the cable. The mic operates within 100 Hz to 10 kHz and supports audio output at 24-bit/48 kHz.

The CX 80U is priced at $39.95, while the HD 400U costs $99.95. Both models are currently available for purchase.
