Kohler has launched Dekoda — a $599 device that attaches to the rim of a toilet bowl and, with the help of an iPhone, tracks the user’s health. The sensor analyzes waste products, assesses hydration levels and digestive issues, and alerts you to signs of possible illnesses.

Dekoda is launching a new direction for Kohler Health, in which the company plans to turn the bathroom into «a connected space for monitoring health and well-being».

How the Dekoda sensor works

The sensor attaches to most toilets with a simple clamping mechanism and is aimed inside the bowl to «see only the contents». The device uses several optical sensors and a spectroscopy method, analyzing how light interacts with waste. Based on this data, machine-learning algorithms determine the frequency, shape and consistency of stool, and detect dehydration and other abnormalities.

If the sensor detects traces of blood, it sends a notification to the owner’s smartphone via the Kohler Health app. The company notes that the device doesn’t reveal the source of the problem, but it helps draw attention to possible risks in time.

Dekoda comes with a magnetic charging station and a wall-mounted remote with a fingerprint sensor that distinguishes users and protects guest data. The electronics and battery are on the outside of the bowl, and the battery can be removed and charged separately. Kohler warns that the device doesn’t work properly with dark-colored toilets where the lighting is reduced.

Privacy and data handling

All collected information is encrypted with end-to-end encryption and stored in the Kohler Health mobile app, available for iOS and soon — for Android. The app displays statistics on gut health and hydration levels, and helps track the impact of nutrition on absorption.

Price and Subscription
