Fujifilm has unveiled the X-E5 with a 40MP sensor and retro display

Fujifilm has announced the X-E5 mirrorless camera with a design in the spirit of classic rangefinder cameras. The new camera has a 40MP sensor, image stabilization system, updated control interface, and a new display mode for the electronic viewfinder. Sales will start in August 2025 at a price of $1699.95, and with a kit lens for $1899.95.

Externally, the X-E5 resembles the popular but scarce X100VI, inheriting its sensor, tilting display and stabilization, but allowing you to swap lenses. The body is slightly larger than the previous X-E4 to accommodate the stabilization module, and the weight has increased to 445 grams – 80 grams more than before.

Sticking with the classics: controls and display

The main new control innovation is the front panel flip switch. It supports up to five assignable functions, including Surround View, which displays the frame boundaries and surroundings when shooting in cropped formats.
The camera also gets a separate disk for Fujifilm’s proprietary film simulations. The top panel has a viewing window reminiscent of the mechanical frame counters on analog cameras. A total of 20 film simulations are pre-installed, of which six are attached to the disc and three more are available for customization.

Special attention has been paid to the 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder. It’s now got Classical Display Mode -an interface in the style of film rangefinder cameras. It includes red digital exposure indicators, rounded-angle frames, and a “pointer” exposure meter on the side, like on old SLR cameras like the Pentax K1000.

New lens and availability
At the same time as the camera, a new Fujinon 23mm f/2.8 lens has also been unveiled, which when paired with the X-E5 gives it a focal length identical to the X100’s built-in lens. For now, it’s only available with the camera, but it will be available separately for $499.95 at the end of 2025.

With the release of the X-E5, Fujifilm continues to update the X series with the latest sensor, autofocus and stabilization technologies. The new model is positioned as a balanced model for lovers of brand aesthetics and classic controls, but with the ability to change optics and modern features.
