CES 2024: Rabbit R1 – an AI-powered mobile device that’s unlike any other

Artificial intelligence was everywhere at CES 2024. From smart home devices to smartphones, robots to TVs, cars to computers — everyone wants their piece of the AI pie. Santa Monica-based AI startup Rabbit Inc. has launched Rabbit R1, a handheld mobile device.

An AI startup in Santa Monica has launched Rabbit R1.

The R1 — is an autonomous handheld device controlled by natural language. It features a touchscreen, push-to-talk button, analog scroll wheel, microphone for voice commands, speakers for answering and a 360-degree rotating computer vision-enabled camera called Rabbit Eye. It’s powered by a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, has 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a USB-C port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a SIM card slot with 4G support. So what can it do?

The demo on the startup’s website says it best, but essentially, the R1 comes with a Large Action Model (LAM)-based operating system called Rabbit OS. It helps the device navigate and use all the apps faster than on a regular smartphone. The company claims that its underlying model is able to learn users’ intentions and behavior when using certain apps, and then mimic them reliably and quickly.

For example, you could link Spotify to R1 to not only play music using voice commands, but also ask the AI to perform contextual tasks, such as playing other songs from the same album. You can ask R1 to tell you who wrote the lyrics, who composed the music, who sampled the song, and more. It’s similar to talking to ChatGPT, but the company claims R1’s answers are much faster.

And it’s a lot faster.

For connected apps like Uber, you can ask R1 to order you a ride home from the office, and it will accomplish the task in one step, compared to the multiple steps you’d take to order a cab yourself through a smartphone app. You can even give a command like «find me an Uber that works for me and my six friends» and R1 will book an UberXL instead of a regular Uber.

«Rabbit is now working to create an intuitive app-free service by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence. Big language models like ChatGPT have shown it’s possible to understand natural language with AI; our Big Action Model takes it a step further: it doesn’t just generate text in response to human input —it generates actions on behalf of users to help us solve problems» —said Rabbit founder and CEO Jesse Liu.

The Rabbit R1 is already available for pre-sale at $199. Orders will start arriving in the US in March. At launch, the R1 will be trained on the most popular apps. Later on, it will also have an experimental feature that will allow users to train their own «rabbits» to perform certain tasks in niche apps and workflows.

Rabbit R1 will also be available for sale in the US.
