Apple Watch with microLED is delayed due to production issues

According to a new supply chain analysis, the first Apple Watch with a microLED display won’t be released in 2025, as previously planned, but in 2026 due to technological difficulties with the manufacturing process. According to the report, LG is the primary (and likely the only) supplier for now, and the Korean tech giant is looking for a way to make microLED panel production feasible.

The current production of microLED panels is extremely expensive for several reasons, most notably low yields. Manufacturing these panels is very difficult and many of them are substandard. The nature of microscopic light emitting diodes makes the whole process challenging.

L LG has reportedly developed a solution to fix defective microLED panels, but the process itself is now quite expensive. So LG is buying patents, including 14 US patents filed by Taiwanese company Ultra Display Technology. These patents are related to more reliable and precise placement of chips, which will improve performance.

The first Apple Watch to feature microLED panels will be the Ultra watch, and then the technology will expand to regular models.
