Apple wants to implement Touch ID in future smart watches

According to a new report based on internal code for Apple developers, the company is exploring the possibility of implementing Touch ID (fingerprint scanner) in its watches.
The feature isn’t expected to arrive until next year at the earliest, likely in the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The code mentions “AppleMesa,” which has long been used internally as a codename for Touch ID.
An Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to be available by next year at the earliest.
Since the code is for internal use only, the idea is likely in the prototype stage. Consequently, none of the models being released this year will get the feature.

If you wonder where exactly the fingerprint scanner will be placed on the watch, the answer is similar to smartwatches – either embedded in a button or in the screen. Previously, there were rumors of a sensor under the display, and a side button option is also possible.
Last week there were rumors of a major watch redesign next year, and Touch ID could be part of that change. The 2026 models could also get a new processor.
