Apple released watchOS 9.6.1 with a big medical fix

Today, Apple released watchOS 9.6.1 update, which is available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later models. This model was released on September 21, 2018. That means owners of Apple Watch Series 4 through Series 8, the two Apple Watch SE models, and Apple Watch Ultra will be able to download and install the update, which is the first for the device since watchOS 9.6 was released on July 24 this year.

After next month, Apple will release watchOS 10, which will include a new widget-based user interface for compatible Apple Watch models. Apparently, the watchOS 9.6.1 update includes a fix for an issue that prevents access to motion data for apps that use the Movement Disorder API to track tremors and symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.

An update to watchOS 9.6.1 will include a fix for an issue that prevents apps that use the Movement Disorder API to track tremors and symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease from accessing motion data.

For example, H20 Therapeutics offers an app for the Apple Watch that tracks tremor and dyskinesia in Parkinson’s patients between doctor visits. This is accomplished because the app utilizes Apple’s API to track movement disorders and the device’s inertial sensors.

Dyskinesia — these are involuntary movements suffered by people with Parkinson’s disease. In 94% of cases, the smartwatch app was able to capture changes in a Parkinson’s patient’s symptoms that matched clinicians’ expectations based on the patient’s current treatment. Clinicians are reviewing data on the remaining 6% of Parkinson’s patients to strategize on how to improve their treatment.

Before the update, Parkinson’s disease apps couldn’t access the Movement Disorder API, preventing clinicians from getting information about how effective their treatment plan was for a particular patient wearing an Apple Watch. The H20 app, called Parky, collects 288 data points daily from Parkinson’s patients, assuming the watch is worn all the time. The color-coded user interface uses green to indicate that the patient has reduced symptoms.

To update your Apple Watch, make sure the watch is on a charger and within range of an iPhone connected to a Wi-Fi signal. Once your Apple Watch is at least 50% charged, the installation process will begin. Do not reboot or remove your Apple Watch from the charger until the update is complete.
