Apple will add studio-quality sound recording and camera controls to AirPods

The devices will get support for studio-quality audio recording and camera control, expanding the ability to capture and communicate. The updates will be available in the fall along with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.
Record studio audio from any device
The studio-grade audio recording feature lets you record vocals and speech at high quality, even in noisy environments. This is especially important for interviewers, podcasters, musicians and other content creators working in the field. The technology is based on the H2 chip, directional microphones, and computational audio algorithms.
The new feature is supported on iPhone, iPad and Mac and works with Camera, Voice Recorder, Messaging, FaceTime, CallKit, Webex and other compatible services. Improved voice isolation for clearer speech during calls and video calls.
Remote Camera Control via AirPods
Users will be able to control their iPhone or iPad’s camera via a sensor on the earbuds. One long press on the AirPods’ stalk starts a photo or video, and a second press stops recording. That makes it easy for those who record themselves on the move or synchronize their actions with music.
The feature is compatible with both the Camera app and supported third-party apps.
Availability and testing
The new features are already available to developers through the Apple Developer Program. A public beta will be available next month through the Apple Beta Software Program. The final release is scheduled for the fall, and the update will be distributed for free. Some features may not be available in certain countries and languages due to legal restrictions.
