AirTag 2 could be out in 2025: what will change in the next-generation tracker

It’s been almost four years since the first AirTag was released, but in all that time Apple has never updated its hardware. Now, however, we have reason to expect the second-generation AirTag the second-generation AirTag could be unveiled as early as May or June, and according to leaks, Apple is preparing some major changes. Here’s a look at what’s new in AirTag 2 – and why it’s not just a cosmetic update.
Expanded search radius: new UWB chip
The main innovation concerns the Precision Finding -the same technology that allows you to find lost items with high accuracy. The current AirTag uses a U1 chip based on Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology. It has a range of about 10-15 meters, which is enough for a room or a small apartment.
But in the second generation, Apple plans to use a more advanced UWB chip – the same one found in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Series 9, according to Bloomberg. It provides accurate positioning at distances of up to 60 meters, making AirTag 2 much more effective at finding things on the street, in the office or in a large home.
But the AirTag 2 is not the only way to find things on the street, in the office or in a large home.
A new level of security: anti-modification
AirTag has been the subject of discussion more than once due to surveillance cases, with attackers finding ways to disable the device’s built-in speaker so that it doesn’t emit signals and remains invisible to the victim. According to recent rumors, Apple is working on ways to remove the ability to physically modify the AirTag, increasing protection against unauthorized use.

Additional alerting protocols are also expected to appear in the Find My ecosystem to let users know about suspicious activity nearby sooner.
The design will remain the same – and that’s a minus?
Despite the internal updates, the device’s shape likely won’t change. The AirTag will still remain round, like a “tablet,” and will not be adapted to fit in a purse or thin objects. Some competitors offer ultra-thin, card-shaped trackers, but they don’t support high-precision navigation, a feature that remains an Apple exclusive for now.

When to expect AirTag 2?
Insider Kosutami claims that the release of the new tracker could take place as early as May or June 2025, which means it’s highly likely that AirTag 2 will be shown at WWDC 2025. That makes sense: the event has traditionally been a platform for announcing new devices and features in Apple’s ecosystem.
There’s no word yet on pricing and possible versions, but we can assume that the price will remain at the same level as the first model
