BMW has revealed the M2 Dakar and M3 Touring GT3 Evo – and it’s the cruelest April Fool’s prank yet

The Bavarian auto giant decided to play on the weaknesses of car enthusiasts on Fool’s Day – and it was too convincing. BMW unveiled renderings of two supposedly new models – the M2 Dakar off-road coupe and the M3 Touring GT3 Evo track station wagon – which, as it turns out, only exist in pictures. The internet fell in love – and then was disappointed.
M2 Dakar: the brutal off-road coupe that won’t be
The exterior of the M2 Dakar looks like it came from an advertising campaign for a real off-road monster: a raised suspension, widened arches, massive bumpers with improved entry and exit angles, mud tires, underbody protection and even a roof rack with spare tire and additional lighting.

Under the hood is the signature in-line six-cylinder engine producing 473 horsepower that’s already used in the production M2. In the renders, the coupe looks chunky, brash and as ready as possible for a cross-country assault. Fans immediately drew parallels with the Porsche 911 Dakar and Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, hinting: “if they can do it, why not BMW?”
Even if it was a limited edition, there would definitely be demand. And even if the price was on a par with premium sports cars, BMW has everything it needs to pay for such a project. Unfortunately, it was just a prank.
M3 Touring GT3 Evo: the most aggressive station wagon that doesn’t exist
The second “nonsense” unveiled by M Motorsport on Instagram* is the M3 Touring GT3 Evo, a fantastically aggressive sports station wagon with a racing aesthetic. A huge anti-wing, massive rear diffuser, additional air intakes in the front fenders and doors, racing dodger – it looks like it’s come off the track at the «24 Hours of Le Mans»

According to the comments below the post, fans were ready to open pre-orders on the day of the announcement. But no – it’s just a joke. And a cruel one at that, considering how many people would actually want a car like this in their lifetime.
“Just make them already” – network reaction
Surprisingly, both cars have generated not only smiles, but also real requests for BMW to put them into production. A wave of comments is building up on social media under the brand’s posts: «Build it!», «Shut up and take my money!», «This is no joke, it’s a dream!»
With the growing popularity of niche models and limited editions, it’s not out of the question that someone at BMW is seriously considering it. After all, good jokes sometimes turn into business decisions – especially when they cause such a stir.
