Sam Altman’s Worldcoin project launches cryptocurrency in the US

Worldcoin, the cryptocurrency project of OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, is officially launching in the United States. After years of collecting biometric data using “metal spheres” – iris scanning devices – Tools for Humanity has begun distributing WLD tokens in the U.S. market.
Iris for crypto: how it works
The essence of the project is simple yet controversial: users around the world have their irises scanned using special devices Orb to obtain a digital identity on the blockchain (World ID) and Worldcoin tokens (WLD).
Now, starting this week, U.S. residents will also be able to participate:
- New users who undergo an eye scan through World Orb will be credited 16 WLD
- Users already registered through the World App will receive an «initial grant» of 150 WLD, which will automatically go into their wallets.
The cryptocurrency will be available on popular platforms, including Coinbase, and will be able to be used both in-app and in the future via a physical card.

WLD debit card from Visa is on its way
At a press conference in San Francisco called «At Last» Sam Altman and the project’s CEO Alex Blania also announced a partnership with Visa. By the end of the year, they plan to release debit card, which will allow convert WLD into fiat money when paying at regular stores.
Where can I get scanned?
More than 7,000 World Orb units will be available at launch in the United States. Scans can be taken at “World Space” locations in the following cities:
- San Francisco
- Los Angeles
- Atlanta
- Miami
- Nashville
- Austin
The Orbs will also be available in Razer stores, and a compact version of the device, the Orb Mini, which looks like a smartphone.
What’s behind the Worldcoin project?
The company Tools for Humanity was founded in 2019 by Sam Altman, Alex Blania and Max Novenstern. The main goal of the project is to create a universal identity verification system in the digital space, especially in an era of AI dominance and potential proliferation of AGI (universal artificial intelligence).
“We need a solution for trust in the AGI era, Altman said from the stage, explaining the project’s philosophy.
