Samsung is losing ground in the foldable smartphone market

Samsung was the first company to bring a mass-market foldable smartphone to the market and still offers the widest lineup of such devices. However, it has not been able to hold on to the segment lead.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung ranked only third in foldable phone shipments with a 9% share in the second quarter of 2025. Huawei was in first place (45%), followed by — Motorola (28%). A year ago, the distribution was different: Samsung had 21%, Huawei — 32% and Motorola — 14%.

Experts note that the foldable smartphone market is largely shaped in China, where Huawei’s position is strengthened not only by technology and pricing, but also by the patriotic factor.

There were other reasons for Samsung’s decline. In Q2 2025, the company offered the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, which failed to meet buyers’ expectations. Many decided to wait for the next generation — the Fold 7 and Flip 7.

The situation changed in July: the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 received noticeable improvements and became an instant hit. Due to high demand, Samsung had to increase production: instead of the planned 320,000 Fold 7s, it produced 430,000 in August and plans to build 260,000 units in September.

Analysts predict that Galaxy Z sales will grow in the third quarter and the company could regain its leadership. An additional trump card should be the upcoming Galaxy Z TriFold — a smartphone with a triple-folding screen.
