Nintendo Switch 2 became the fastest-selling device in the company’s history

Nintendo said it sold 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles worldwide in the first four days after release, making it the fastest-selling system in the company’s history and likely the biggest launch for a game console overall.

“Fans around the world have shown tremendous interest in Nintendo Switch 2 as an improved way to play at home and on the go,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. – “We’re grateful for this response and are excited to see how much fun players are already having with new features and games that bring friends and families together.”

“We’re excited to see how much fun the new features and games are already bringing to players.

Nintendo Europe head Luciano Perenya added: “Nintendo Switch 2 is the next stage in the evolution of Nintendo Switch and we are delighted that it has already been so warmly received by players across Europe. We look forward to seeing how gamers will come together in games like Mario Kart World and share the experience, regardless of distance.”

In comparison, the PlayStation 5 shipped (rather than sold) 3.4 million units in the first four weeks and 4.5 million in the first seven weeks since release, with Sony’s console experiencing serious supply issues.

The Switch 2 launch gives Nintendo a strong push to reach its target of 15 million units in its first fiscal year – or even exceed that figure, according to many analysts. If the console hits the 15 million sales milestone, it will surpass the original Switch’s results. By comparison, the PS4 and PS5 launched later in the year and sold about 7.5 million units each (with the PS5 suffering a shortage due to the pandemic).

Nintendo Switch 2 went on sale June 5 alongside Mario Kart World, Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and updated versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

The CEO of Tokyo-based consultancy Kantan Games, Dr. Serkan Toto, said in an interview with VGC that Nintendo now needs to build on its success with high-profile releases in the run-up to Christmas:

“Can anyone in the industry be surprised by that number? Expectations have always been incredibly high, and Nintendo has met them. Now it’s critical that the company maintains momentum through the end of the year and the holidays – especially after it became clear that GTA6 has been delayed until 2025.

The level of support from third-party developers is much higher compared to the launch of the original Switch – the difference is enormous. But now Nintendo needs to go on the offensive with its own blockbusters.”
