New BMW iX3 electric SUV spotted on the streets of Shanghai

A camouflaged next-generation BMW iX3 has been spotted in Shanghai – right on the city streets, not on closed proving grounds. With German license plates, the prototype confirms: the company is preparing to release an electric crossover based on the Neue Klasse X concept unveiled last year.

For BMW, launching this vehicle is a matter of strategic survival. China remains the brand’s biggest market, but the current iX3 is not in demand. Between January and July 2025, only 8,475 units were sold in the country, while the gasoline-powered X3 sold 39,571. In the face of stiff competition from local manufacturers, the new iX3 is bound to be a success.

The design is markedly different from the brand’s current models, with a low glazing line, powerful rear fenders and recessed door handles for improved aerodynamics. Five-spoke wheels received aerodynamic hubcaps, and at the rear – thin lights and spoiler. The car is larger than before, but still more compact than the BMW X5, making it a key member of the midsize SUV segment.
Technology is key. The flagship version of the iX3 50 xDrive promises up to 800 kilometers of WLTP range (about 900 kilometers according to China’s CLTC and 644 kilometers according to the U.S. EPA). The 800-volt platform can replenish 350 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes with peak charging power of up to 400 kW.

The interior will also be radically new. “A panoramic display” will project data across the entire lower portion of the windshield, and the familiar HUD is provided for the driver.

The next-generation driver assistance system will be able to change lanes by looking at the side mirror. BMW is developing more advanced autonomous driving features in conjunction with Chinese company Momenta.
The exact specifications have not yet been announced, but it is known that the model will have a version with two electric motors and all-wheel drive, significantly more powerful than the current 210 kW (282 hp) variant.
