Honda unveils plan to produce solid-state batteries for electric vehicles

Honda has opened a demonstration plant in Japan to showcase its strategy to mass-produce solid-state batteries. These energy-hungry batteries promise to revolutionize electric vehicles by providing longer range and longer life.

Benefits and Challenges of Solid State Batteries

Solid-state batteries differ from traditional lithium-ion batteries by replacing the liquid electrolyte with dry conductive materials. This allows for higher energy density and longer battery life. However, their production remains a challenge due to the need for new technologies.

Honda aims to overcome these obstacles and make the manufacturing process cost-effective. Similar developments are also being pursued by QuantumScape  (backed by Volkswagen), Nissan  and Factorial, which is testing semi-solid-state batteries for the Dodge Charger.

Honda is also testing semi-solid-state batteries for Dodge Charger cars.

Honda Demonstration Plant

In Sakura City, Japan, Honda has opened a 27,000 m² demonstration site to accelerate research and practice production processes. The plant is divided into three key buildings:

  1. Cathode formation and cell assembly.
  2. Formation of anodes.
  3. Electrolyte activation and module assembly.

The production line uses Continuous Inline Mixer, which Honda says is three times faster than the standard battery processing method. The first batteries on the line are expected to be produced as early as January.

Honda says the line is designed to produce the first batteries on the line.

Mass production and the prospect of affordable electric cars

Honda expects to launch mass production of solid-state batteries in the second half of the 2020s. CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the technology will be key to bringing down the cost of electric vehicles.

Honda’s CEO Toshihiro Mibe said the technology will be a key factor in bringing down the cost of electric vehicles.

In parallel, Honda continues to develop ongoing projects. In particular:

    .

  • The Honda Prologue electric SUV, built on a GM platform, is showing success in the U.S.
  • .

  • A large SUV is set for release in 2025.
  • A new production car based on the Honda Zero platform using LG batteries will be unveiled at CES. As a reminder, Honda and LG are jointly building a battery factory in Ohio.

The Future of Electric Cars with Honda

With the introduction of solid-state batteries, Honda will not only make its electric vehicles more efficient, but also strengthen its position in the EV market by offering durable and affordable solutions for consumers.
