GAZ is switching to a four-day working week and here’s why

From August 2025, the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) will switch to a shortened working week. The reason was a sharp decline in demand for commercial vehicles and general instability in the automotive market, the company’s press service said, Interfax reports.

The company explained that since the beginning of the year, the segments of medium-duty trucks, light commercial vehicles and buses showed a 40%, 30% and 60% drop, respectively. The main factors are the high key rate and limited access to financial instruments for car purchases. The introduction of a four-day schedule will allow the company to retain staff, adapt production volumes and balance production line utilization in the new environment.

The plant emphasizes that all social guarantees and benefits for employees will remain in full. Since the beginning of 2025, the company has been carrying out a comprehensive optimization of costs, covering different areas of activity.

At the same time, the plant emphasizes that all social guarantees and benefits for employees will be preserved in full.

Workers were informed in advance about the possible transition to a shorter week. In September, the work schedule will be reviewed monthly, depending on the market conditions. If the situation stabilizes, the plant will return to the previous schedule.

It was previously reported that AvtoVAZ is considering similar measures – the transition to a shorter schedule could take place as early as fall.
