This McLaren F1 could be the most expensive in history

One of the rarest examples of a McLaren F1 owned by Oracle founder Larry Ellison is up for sale. The auction will take place in August during Monterey Car Week in California. RM Sotheby’s estimates that the car could go for more than $23 million, making it one of the most expensive F1s in history.
With less than 6,500 miles and a unique history

The car in question is a 1997 McLaren F1 with chassis #062. It has only been driven 6,500 miles since it was purchased by its new owner, Larry Ellison. Ellison’s use of the supercar was extremely infrequent: in eight years of ownership, he had only racked up 2,600 miles. Since 2010, the car has been owned by a third owner, who has added less than a thousand miles to the odometer.

The F1 has spent its entire life in California. It’s one of only seven examples officially imported into the US. The body is painted Magnesium Silver, the interior is black leather with a gray insert on the driver’s seat.
Restoration and upgrades from McLaren Special Operations
The car has received a number of upgrades from McLaren Special Operations, including a sport exhaust system (complete with original exhaust system), improved air conditioning, upgraded radiators and an aluminum fuel tank.

The car underwent major maintenance in October 2023. Among the work performed was a transmission rebuild, spark plug replacement, new tires on original magnesium rims, a new battery, original windshield and restoration of the thermal gold foil in the engine compartment.

The McLaren F1 is powered by a BMW-designed 6.1-liter atmospheric V12 and remains the benchmark among 1990s supercars. With its minimal mileage and full service history, Chassis #062 may not just attract the attention of collectors, but also set a new price record.
