After nearly nine years of promises, Ilon Musk has made another admission: not all Tesla cars are ready for full autopilot.
The Problem with Hardware 3
In a conference call, Musk said that Hardware 3 vehicles released between 2019 and 2023 will require an update to support autonomous software. Those cars are equipped with outdated computing modules that now work with the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) version of autopilot.
“Frankly, we’re going to have to upgrade Hardware 3 computers for those who have already purchased Full Self-Driving. It’s going to be painful and difficult, but we’ll get through it,” Musk said.

“We’re going to have to do it.

Defeated Expectations
Musk’s claims about Tesla’s full autonomy have been made since as far back as 2016. Back then, the company claimed that every car was already equipped with the necessary hardware for full autopilot. That promise was an important factor in the company’s valuation, although the post with those claims has since disappeared from Tesla’s website.
Musk’s claims about full autonomy have been made since 2016.
But cars with Hardware 2.0 and 2.5 never quite made it. When Hardware 3 arrived in 2019, owners of older models had to buy an upgrade to use advanced autopilot. Some sued Tesla over false advertising, and the court ruled that the updates should be provided for free.

What’s next?
.
Today, Tesla is releasing cars with Hardware 4. Musk and other top executives have long assured that they could create software that would allow Hardware 3 to function autonomously. However, Musk has now admitted that this goal is unattainable.

Despite admitting past mistakes, Musk said the company intends to prove its capabilities with a robotaxi pilot project in Austin that will start as early as June. After that, the plan is to release an update to the cars with Hardware 4, allowing them to drive without human intervention.
