Chevrolet announced the Corvette ZR1X with 1,250 horsepower

Chevrolet has barely had time to unveil the 1,064-horsepower Corvette ZR1 before its status as the most powerful Corvette has already been challenged. The new ZR1X raises the performance bar with a hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive. The car is aimed at enthusiasts ready to go beyond the usual limits of the American sports car.

Corvette lineup: from Stingray to ZR1X

The Corvette still starts with the base Stingray with 490 hp and a price tag of just over $70,000. Next is the E-Ray hybrid (655 hp; around $100,000) with a quieter character. Behind it comes the track-oriented Z06 (670 hp; from 110 thousand). Recently, the turbocharged ZR1 (1,064 hp; about $175,000) joined the family.

The ZR1X brings together the E-Ray and ZR1: a combination of turbo V8, all-electric front axle and advanced aerodynamics.

Hybrid powertrain and modes of operation

The battery system has been redesigned and is 26 percent more powerful (less than 3 kWh, no mains charging). The driver selects the appropriate mode:

– Endurance Mode – stable output over a long distance without consuming a full charge- Qualifying Mode – maximum power for one fast lap- Push to Pass – short bursts of traction for overtaking

Together, the powertrain develops 1,250 horsepower, which explains the acceleration to 60 mph in less than two seconds.

Brakes, chassis and handling

For confident stopping, there are 16.5-inch-diameter Alcon carbon fiber rims that provide up to 1.9 g of deceleration. Tire size is kept the same as the rear-wheel-drive ZR1 so as not to increase unsprung weight. The car’s behavior is corrected by updated traction control software.

Engineers promise familiar Corvette friendliness despite twice the power compared to the Stingray.

Tentative price and outlook

Chevrolet has yet to reveal the price of the ZR1X. Focusing on the difference between the Stingray and the E-Ray, it’s logical to expect a price around $200,000. With carbon fiber brakes and a refined battery, the final price tag could be closer to the level of European hypercars.

The company has already put the new car through its paces at the Nürburgring, covering more than 600 miles.
