Google has released the first public beta of Android 16

After a series of development tests, Google has started rolling out the first public beta of Android 16. The update is available for Google Pixel devices (models starting with the Pixel 6) enrolled in the Android Beta Program and is being installed via OTA.
Adaptive apps for different devices
One of the major new features of Android 16 was adaptive apps. Google has improved the compatibility of apps with different screens so that they display correctly regardless of the size, orientation, or form factor of the device.
According to Google’s announcement, apps designed for API level 36 are required to support window scaling on screens with widths of 600dp or more. Developers will be prohibited from blocking window scaling or orientation. This feature is particularly useful for foldable devices, providing a more user-friendly interface layout.

Live Updates – dynamic notifications
Google has introduced Live Updates, a counterpart to the Live Activities feature available on the iPhone 14 Pro. These dynamic notifications are used to display real-time information, such as when you’re navigating, hailing a cab, or having food delivered.
Live Updates – Live Updates
Live Updates include a Progress Style template with icon customization, milestone tracking, and status displays. Samsung previously implemented a similar solution in its One UI 7 with Now Bar.

Advanced Video Codec and Camera Improvements
Android 16 now supports the Advanced Professional Video (APV) video codec, which provides professional quality recording and post-production. The codec supports resolutions up to 8K with a bitrate of 2Gbps.
Google has added built-in night scene recognition for cameras, improved vertical text rendering, and new tools to improve accessibility.
Android 16 update release plans
Google plans to release at least three beta versions of Android 16 before the official release. The next major update with new APIs will be released in the second quarter, with the final version of the system expected in March.
