OpenAI launched a search function in ChatGPT, competing with Google and Microsoft

OpenAI announced the launch of a new search feature in its popular chatbot ChatGPT, increasing competition with search engines such as Google, Microsoft’s Bing and Perplexity. The new feature, dubbed SearchGPT, offers users access to up-to-the-minute information including sports scores, stock quotes, news, weather forecasts and more, using real-time search and collaboration with data providers.

A new threat to Google?”

Since ChatGPT debuted in November 2022, Alphabet investors have become concerned about a possible redistribution of search market share. The introduction of the search feature heightens fears that OpenAI could take away some of Google’s users by offering a more modern way to get information online. Alphabet shares fell about 1% after the announcement.

Competing with Microsoft and other implications

Although Microsoft has invested about $14 billion in OpenAI, the new move intensifies competition between the companies. OpenAI products, including ChatGPT, now compete with Microsoft tools such as Bing and Copilot, presenting potential complications for the relationship between the two tech giants.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the search feature is his “favorite feature” since launching ChatGPT. The company says users will now be able to search for information in a “natural and intuitive way” with the ability to ask additional questions in a conversational format.

Integration with news sources

OpenAI has partnered with major media companies such as Associated Press, Reuters, Le Monde, The Atlantic, Time and Vox Media. ChatGPT responses will now include links to sources, which can be opened by clicking the “Sources” button below the response.

OpenAI’s Financial Situation and Challenges

Earlier in October, OpenAI completed a new round of funding with a $157 billion valuation for the company. Despite the significant investment, the company expects a loss of $5 billion on revenue of $3.7 billion this year.

The company has also faced a number of challenges, including a transition to a for-profit structure and several high-profile executive departures. Jan Leake, former head of the security team, said at the time of his dismissal that “security issues took a back seat to flashy products.”
