OpenAI launches Atlas AI browser based on ChatGPT

OpenAI has unveiled its own artificial intelligence-enabled browser called ChatGPT Atlas — a major step in the company’s push to compete with Google and change the way people search for information online.

The company said macOS users will be the first to get the platform, with Windows, iOS and Android coming soon. ChatGPT Atlas will be available for free to all users from launch.

The browser market is now becoming the new battleground between the AI tech giants. While Google Chrome still holds the lead, there is a growing sense that the emergence of chatbots and intelligent agents is changing the very nature of how people work and search for information online. Several startups have already released their own AI browsers — such as Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia. Meanwhile, Google and Microsoft are adding AI features to Chrome and Edge to make their products more cutting-edge.

The head of Atlas’ engineering team, Ben Gouger, said on the live stream that ChatGPT is the centerpiece of the new browser. Users will be able to interact with search results right in the Atlas window, much like Perplexity or Google’s AI mode.

One of the key features of AI browsers is a built-in sidebar with a chatbot that automatically understands the context of what’s happening on the screen. This eliminates the need to manually copy text, links, or files into ChatGPT, making interaction much more convenient.

According to OpenAI product manager Adam Fry, ChatGPT Atlas has also gotten such a sidebar. In addition, the browser will keep a «history of actions» ChatGPT will be able to remember which sites a user visits and how they interact with them to provide more personalized responses.

The browser is also equipped with an artificial intelligence-based agent that can perform simple online actions on behalf of the user. This «agent mode» will be available at launch only to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers.

ChatGPT CEO Nick Turley, speaking at the OpenAI DevDay conference, noted that browsers once changed the idea of what an operating system might look like, and now ChatGPT is doing the same for searching and interacting on the web.

Whether ChatGPT Atlas can really compete with Google Chrome, which has more than three billion users worldwide, remains to be seen. While interest in AI browsers is growing rapidly in Silicon Valley, their impact on the mainstream audience remains limited.
