Google has introduced Gemini AI into Gmail, Docs, and Calendar

Google continues to integrate artificial intelligence into all corners of its office suite, making Workspace not just convenient, but intelligent. Today, the company announced a new batch of updates, including document-based audio summaries, intelligent meeting scheduling help, and a Canvas tool for text and code.

These innovations build on the Gemini model and aim to make everyday work more efficient and document collaboration more flexible.

Podcasts from Documents: How Audio Overview Works

One of the most notable additions is the Audio Overview tool, which previously debuted in the experimental NotebookLM service and has now made its way to Google Workspace. It lets you create podcast-like audio files based on uploaded documents and presentations.

The feature is particularly useful when working with research materials: it’s able to create voice-over summaries based solely on the files provided. Everything is spoken in a natural dialog style, which helps you absorb information by ear. Audio files can be downloaded and used, for example, to prepare for presentations or to listen on the go.

Canvas: generate and edit text and code

The second significant new feature is a tool called Canvas. It allows users to create drafts, edit text, and even optimize program code with AI. The whole process is based on the Gemini model: it helps you formulate ideas, improve structure, and view preliminary results of your work.

Another significant new feature is Canvas, which allows users to create drafts, edit text, and even optimize program code with AI.

What you create in Canvas can be saved and transferred to Google Docs for further editing and collaboration.

Calendar finds appointments in mail

Intelligent features have also arrived in Calendar. Gemini now knows how to detect if emails contain data about upcoming events and suggests adding them to the calendar. If a user misses such emails, the AI will remind them of a possible meeting by opening a chat window with the relevant information.

An AI can also help you to find out if there’s an upcoming event in your calendar.

This is a particularly strong trend in enterprise assistants, with Microsoft and startups like Martin AI already offering such capabilities, and now Google is keeping pace by offering its own analog.

AI is becoming more deeply embedded in office platforms

The integration of AI into Google Workspace is part of the company’s larger strategy to increase competition with Microsoft 365 and other solutions. Google already introduced Gemini chat in Gmail, Docs, and Calendar last year. Today’s updates make Workspace a full-fledged platform with deep AI involvement in everyday tasks.

So far, it’s a great way to make Workspace a full-fledged platform with deep AI involvement in everyday tasks.

The more often employees use AI capabilities in their mail, documents, and schedules, the higher the overall adoption rate will be.

Business customers may be particularly interested in these features: the more often employees use AI capabilities in their mail, documents, and schedules, the higher the company’s overall adoption rate will be.
