Star Wars: Backstory (Dec. 3)

In the “Star Wars” universe, Disney+ has had some successful TV series and some fairly passable ones that failed to keep viewers interested. But now there’s high hopes for “Star Wars: The Support Team,” a sci-fi series. The plot of the series covers events that take place at the same time as the events of “The Mandalorean” and its spin-offs, as well as after the events of “Return of the Jedi,” and focuses on younger characters. It is the story of four children who get lost in the galaxy and must go through a great adventure to get home.

Jude Law plays the role of Jod Na Nawood, a Force wielder who uses his charm and charisma to get out of all sorts of messes perfectly. Among the executive producers is Jon Favreau. The first season of “Star Wars: Backup Team” will have eight episodes and a December 3 start date.
Blackbirds (Dec. 5)

In this British spy thriller, prematurely renewed for a second season, Keira Knightley plays the role of Helen, a woman who finds herself embroiled in a tumultuous affair that threatens to expose her secret. Beyond the Beautiful Facade (Dec. 12)

Ray Romano, Lisa Kudrow, Linda Cardellini, Luke Wilson, Abby Jacobson and Denis Leary are listed in the cast of the dark mystery-comedy, and Will Ferrell is among the executive producers, so there’s a good chance the series will be worth watching. The movie Behind the Pretty Facade is about three different families bidding on a house. Each of them believes that buying the house will solve all their problems, while Lydia (Kudrow) and Paul (Romano) believe that letting go of the house will solve theirs. But the house holds a lot of dark secrets.

Created by Liz Feldman, who also created “Goodbye Forever” and has written scripts for such series as “Two Girls Broke” and “Pretty Girls in Cleveland,” the series continues to explore and elaborate on themes of ambition, mystery and the search for happiness. One prospective buyer wants to sell a house for a profit. A couple of parents-to-be want to lay a foundation but are struggling financially to make it happen. A third potential buyer — a Hollywood star who is only interested in the house out of a need to downsize. With all eight episodes airing at the same time, “Behind the Beautiful Facade” — is the perfect way to wrap up the year.

Dexter: Original Sin (Dec. 13)

Fans were thrilled when Dexter returned in 2020 in the short-lived series “Dexter: New Blood,” which was a much more satisfying season finale than the one we all got in 2013. Now that interest in the hit crime series has been revived, the vigilante serial killer is back again. Only now, a new actor is playing the character that Michael C. Hall made an icon of in “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel to the series.

As the title suggests, the series will tell us the story of young Dexter (Patrick Gibson), just starting out as a Miami police officer. His father Harry, who worked as his son’s conscience in the original series, is still alive, played by Christian Slater. After Harry is horrified to learn what his son has been up to, his father tries to channel Dexter’s urges into killing heinous criminals rather than innocent people. The series promises to show an intriguing and unusual take on stories we’ve only heard about or seen glimpses of in flashbacks of the original.

Squid Game Season 2 (Dec. 26)

The second season of “The Squid Game,” the South Korean survival horror thriller-thriller that took over Netflix — has been awaited for more than three years. It’s a terrifying tale of 456 underdogs who participate in a deadly series of classic children’s schoolyard games to win a huge sum of money. Literally the last person left alive wins. But “The Squid Game” is much deeper than that, tackling topical themes such as class inequality, capitalism and greed.

Fast rising to the top of Netflix’s most-watched shows list after the first season was released, “The Squid Game” remains Netflix’s most-watched non-English series to this day. The series’ protagonist Song Gi-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) returns to take revenge on the man behind the creepy games. But in order to do so, he will have to risk his life and take part in the games again. Jung Jae became the first Asian actor to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for his non-English speaking role in the first season.
