Three years after the outbreak that destroyed the world, Neville is seemingly the only human left in New York City. Everyone else has turned into vampires who can no longer survive in direct sunlight. Neville’s only companion was a German Shepherd named Sam, and he spent his days searching for a cure for his illness. At night, Neville and Sam hid in a barricaded laboratory.
Nevill also constantly left radio messages for any surviving humans, until he finally captured a female vampire and began experimenting on her with his potential cure. After losing Sam in the trap, Neville almost despaired until he met two humans, Anna (Braga) and a boy named Ethan (Charlie Tahan). Soon after, the vampires attacked Neville’s lair. Before they were captured, Neville was able to cure a female vampire and gave a sample of her blood to Anna for safekeeping. While Anna and Ethan escaped, Neville sacrificed himself to kill all of the attacking vampires in hopes that his cure would save the rest of humanity.

Nevill did die in «I—m Legend» but that was not the ending the filmmakers originally filmed. The DVD and Blu-ray have an alternate ending in which Neville realizes that the vampires who attacked him only wanted to retrieve the woman he captured. In a moment of sympathy, Neville releases the female and apologizes to the creatures, after which they leave without further violence. Neville also realized that he had become a monster in their eyes, so he gave up his research and left the lab with Anna and Ethan.

This ending will be considered canonical in the second movie, as it explains Neville’s survival. Presumably, another part of the original movie with this ending will be edited out before the sequel is released.
When will «I—m Legend 2» be released? Warner Bros. hasn’t set a date yet. A director has to be found first. After that, there will likely be a long period of casting and preproduction. The script may already be ready, but the project is still a long way off from release
