Destiny: Rising: release speculation, gameplay and more

The next chapter of the Destiny saga is coming soon, but not in the form most players were expecting. Instead of a full-fledged third installment from original developer Bungie, Destiny: Rising will be released by developer NetEase Games as a free-to-play mobile game. While the mobile market has certainly come a long way from simple pixel games to games you play on consoles, fans of this universe are rightly wary of what a mass service game will look like on a phone. Perhaps even more important is the story, which some have invested more than 10 years in.
And that’s a story that some have invested more than 10 years in.

Release date speculation

NetEase Games didn’t give a specific release date for Destiny: Rising when the game was unveiled, so we’re left to speculate. Based on the fact that the closed alpha will take place in November 2024, we’re predicting that the game won’t be released for at least a year after that to be able to hold a couple more open betas in 2025.

The biggest change from past games is that Destiny: Rising will be a mobile exclusive for iOS and Android devices. Apparently, the developers have no plans to add ports to PC or consoles.

Trailers
The announcement trailer focuses mostly on gameplay, but it showcases impressive visuals and action that looks almost as good as it does on consoles. The biggest detail the trailer shows — is that we won’t be creating our own Guardian as usual, but playing as certain characters. Some of them are familiar to the world of Destiny, and some are — newcomers. These include — Ikora Rey, Iron Lord Jolder and Cabr. Each of them is said to have their own backstory and personality, so it’s possible that playing as each character will have different story benefits or unique storylines for each of them altogether.

The action of Destiny: Rising takes place in an alternate timeline to the main Destiny game, and a distant past at that. Players will experience a different series of events as humanity recovers from the Collapse and works to create the Last City. Being an alternate universe, there’s no need to worry that Destiny: Rising will have much, if any, impact on the main Destiny story, but will remain a stand-alone narrative.

Gameplay
The move to mobile devices hasn’t drastically changed Destiny: Rising’s gameplay. It’s still an FPS with a heavy emphasis on abilities and unique weapons, though you’ll now be able to progress through the game entirely in third-person if you want to. From what we’ve seen, the game retains the core mechanics of Destiny as closely as possible. The game will still have open areas to explore, weapons and loot to mine, as well as PvP and PvE content. The game will have touchscreen controls, but don’t forget about controllers, which can easily be connected to your mobile device.

NetEase promises a host of familiar game modes for both PvE and PvP. These include — a new set of missions in the campaign, Haven Ops sorties and a new raid-like mode called Gauntlet Ops. Among the new modes are —Morgran’s Prey, Legacy and Realms of the IX, but no details on exactly what those will be have been announced.

In Destiny: Rising, you’ll only be able to carry basic weapons and force weapons. In addition, weapon and ability types will depend on which character you play. Relics will determine what super and signature abilities you have, as well as a set of perks.

Pre-order
Destiny: Rising doesn’t have a release date or even a window yet, but even if it did, a pre-order wouldn’t be necessary. It’ll be a free-to-play game whenever it comes out, so all that’s left to do is sit back and wait for any new details from the developers.
