Death Stranding 2: release date, trailers, gameplay and more

There have been many hints and even a few leaks from the protagonist for a long time, but it wasn’t until the Game Awards 2022 that it was officially announced that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will be. And a release date — it’s only a matter of time.

The game was introduced by Hideo Kojima himself — creator of the first installment, which pleasantly surprised many, as well as the long-running franchise — Metal Gear. Of course, nothing about Kojima’s games is simple, and what was revealed about Death Stranding 2 probably raised more questions than it answered. It won’t be long before we can once again put on our sturdy boots and hit the road to find out all the details about the upcoming game.

Release Date Speculation

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach won’t be released wide until 2025.

Platforms

The only platform for which Death Stranding 2 is currently confirmed — is the PS5. This makes sense, as the first game was a PlayStation console exclusive at launch, before getting a PC version in 2020 and even released on PC Game Pass. While Death Stranding 2, like the first game, could come out on PC and even PC Game Pass, Sony owns the copyrights, so don’t expect it to be released on competitors’ consoles.

Trailers

We got our first in-depth look at Death Stranding 2 thanks to the debut trailer shown at the 2022 Game Awards.

The trailer doesn’t show gameplay, but it does show a lot of plot and character details. We see Frajayla and a child (Lou, perhaps?) playing in a room with screens on which the outside world is projected. Frajayla looks younger than in the original, which could mean this is a flashback. Something seems to be going wrong, and they try to escape invisible pursuers in an elevator. After taking a bullet and crashing, she passes out, not knowing what lies ahead for the child.

Afterward, we see Sam, who has visibly aged and is approaching Frajayla. A massive floating structure with the Drawbridge logo rises out of the oil, which she wants him to go on with her.

The trailer ends with the mysterious masked figure about to reveal his face, but the video cuts off before that very face is shown.

This new look at the game, which was unveiled at Sony’s State of Play conference in February 2024, gave us a lot more information about the game: Sam is now working for a group called Drawbridge, again trying to make connections across the country. We also know for sure that the masked man — is Higgs, who has somehow returned from the Beach to get revenge on Sam, and he’s holding a Kojima-style guitar gun that shoots lasers.

Determining the plot of a Kojima game before playing it is almost always impossible (and even afterward it’s still difficult), but we do know that he completely rewrote the script after Pandemic. During The Game Awards 2022, Kojima said:

The Game Awards 2022.

I wrote the plot before the pandemic. But after the pandemic, I just rewrote the whole story from scratch. I also didn’t want to predict the future anymore, so I rewrote it.

Gameplay

The gameplay we’ve seen seems to be an evolution of what was laid out in the first game. It will again feature a lot of walking, climbing and weight management in a much wider range of environments. We also see a bit of combat with new robot enemies, although it’s not entirely clear how they’ll fend off humans.
