The best mods for Fallout 4: Part 1

The Fallout series of games, starting with Fallout 3, are massive and popular. Post-nuclear war is packed with interesting stories to relive and monsters to kill. Fallout 4 was the last single-player installment in the series. Thanks to mods, now is as good a time as ever after the release of the series to replay the last major Fallout game.
After the release of the series, the time to replay the last major Fallout game is now.
Like Skyrim, mods for Fallout 4 are incredibly popular. Some are designed to fix the numerous bugs and glitches that Bethesda games are famous for, while others — add new features. As open and dynamic as the base game is, mods open the door to an infinite number of tools that can be used to extend the life of the game. With so many mods available, it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve analyzed all the best mods for Fallout 4 and picked out the best ones that are worth installing before you leave the asylum again.

Full Dialog Interface

One of the main complaints of Fallout 4 players, both hardcore and casual, was the dialog system. The amount and variety of dialog had admittedly been declining since the original two games, but by the time Fallout 4 was released, all we were given — were four vague options for what a character would say. This led to players often misunderstanding the tone or meaning of the choices. For a role-playing game, this is a serious breach of immersion. Enter the Full Dialogue Interface mod.
The Full Dialogue Interface mod.
The mod is simple. So simple that it’s a wonder it wasn’t put in by default. Instead of giving hints about what a character will say, this mod will completely write what they say. It also redesigns the conversation UI so that text is displayed as a vertical list, as it was in previous games. The mod comes in two versions: Full and Lite. Both versions work with both keyboard and gamepad, and the difference between the two is that the lite version retains the original conversation UI from the base game.

LooksMenu

Recognize it, we all spend way too much time in character creators. Or would like to, but often find ourselves limited by the game’s limitations when trying to recreate ourselves or create the perfect vision of the person we want to play. If you’re going to embody a character for dozens and dozens of hours, you should at least like the way they look. The default options are by no means limited, but there’s never enough.
The default options are not limited by any means, but they’re never enough.
The LooksMenu mod improves character customization in a multitude of ways. You’ll immediately notice that the list of characteristics is much larger than the default, making it much easier to navigate through the list and find what you want to change. In addition, you can now customize certain character traits through the list rather than selecting them from the face model, which even at the best of times can be frustrating. You’ll also get new skin shapes, hair colors and shades, and you can even adjust the resolution of facial textures.
improved weather

The True Storms mod, originally created for Skyrim, has been added to Fallout 4 with even more improvements and features than the original. This mod is meant to make the frankly cheesy dynamic weather system more impressive. But in addition to improving the look, textures, particles, and sounds of the existing weather, the mod also adds brand new forms such as radiation rain, heavy dust storms, heavy fog, and more. Lightning flashes in the distance have been improved and 20 new variations of thunder sound effects have been added to make each strike and boom unique.

The mod could have been left at that, but the modder went further and even gave players insidious bonuses during storms and increased the chance of feral ghouls appearing during radiation storms. The mod works in both Commonwealth and Far Harbor, and finally makes the weather feel like a real element of the game that needs to be paid attention to, rather than just a cosmetic change that happens from time to time.
The mod is a great way to make the weather feel like a real element of the game that needs to be paid attention to, rather than just a cosmetic change that happens every now and then.
Fallout 4 HD Overhaul

Even after the console versions of Fallout 4 received next-gen improvements, you still won’t find a better visual upgrade for the base game than the Fallout 4 HD Overhaul. As you’ve no doubt gathered from the name, this mod improves all textures in the game to resolutions ranging from 1k to 8k. Everything from environments, weapons, items and monsters have undergone a massive visual upgrade and look almost on par with modern games. A powerful PC is required to run the game at this level, so be sure to check the requirements before installing.
Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch

Somebody had to do it, right? With the game’s release, Bethesda can only wait for some brave soul to take the trouble to fix as many bugs and glitches as possible. The unofficial patch for Fallout 4 describes itself as a universal patch that aims to — fix all the bugs in Fallout 4 that the developers haven’t fixed themselves. At least all those that can be fixed with modding, which is quite a lot. To run this mod you will need the latest version of the game, as well as all officially released DLC expansions, but otherwise the mod is made to be as easy to use as possible.
The mod is designed to be as easy to use as possible.
It would be crippling to list all the changes this mod makes. You can expect hundreds of quest related bugs, NPCs, objects, items, gameplay, text placement fixes, and no game breaking changes. The mod is designed to work with as many other mods as possible, making it an easy recommendation for starting the game, and was even created by the same modding team that created the unofficial Oblivion and Skyrim Patch mods. It’s obvious that this team has the knowledge and passion for this sort of thing, and that’s evident in this mod.
