OpenAI has started testing group chats in ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched pilot testing of group chats in ChatGPT in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. The feature works similarly to group chats in regular messengers, but with one important difference — the ChatGPT itself becomes the participant in the conversation. It can help to make a travel itinerary, suggest ideas for renovation, find a restaurant suitable for everyone, or participate in training and work discussions. For example, ChatGPT is able to prepare a report structure based on articles and notes that participants provide.

To create a group chat, you click the people icon in the upper-right corner of the screen in any new or existing dialog. If you start from an already open conversation, ChatGPT will create a new chat with no message history. You can then add participants manually or send a link, which can be used by one to twenty people. They will need to provide a name, nickname and upload a photo. It is important to keep in mind that any link holder can invite other people. Members can also mute others or remove them from the chat except for the creator. If there is a user under 18 in the group, ChatGPT will automatically restrict all sensitive content.

Group chat responses run on GPT-5.1 Auto — this system chooses which model is best for a particular request. According to OpenAI, the chatbot is trained to understand the dynamics of group communication: when to be silent and when — to intervene. However, it can always be summoned simply by mentioning «ChatGPT». The company says it will continue to refine the feature based on feedback from early users before a wider launch.
