Tecno announced the Phantom Ultimate foldable smartphone concept

Tecno today unveiled the latest product from its R&D labs — the Phantom Ultimate folding smartphone concept. It folds sideways, enlarging the display from 6.55″ to 7.11″ in 1.2 to 1.3 seconds. This second concept device from the company is very similar to the Vision V model, only without the folding part.

Phantom Ultimate features a single-drive motor system that unfolds the device at the press of a button located on the top right side of the phone. When unfolded, the device is a basic 6.55-inch smartphone with an additional screen located on the back with Always-On Display.

The specs are a 7.11-inch LTPO AMOLED screen with 2296×1596 resolution and 388 PPI. It offers 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, though such numbers are hard to verify on a concept.

So far, it’s a good bet that it’s not the only one.

The device is 9.93mm thick at the base, and Tecno promises that it’s easy to hold in one hand. The device features protective glass in the slip area and a textured back panel for better grip.

The Phantom Ultimate —s just a concept at this point, though, and there’s no indication that it will hit the market anytime soon. Obviously, there are some technological limitations that need to be overcome for cell phones to emerge, and it’s unclear how long that will take.
