League of Legends tests WASD controls 16 years after release

Riot Games has announced that it is testing a new control scheme for League of Legends based on the WASD keys. Up until this point, the game relied entirely on the classic point-and-click system.

The developers say the goal is to give players a “fresh, yet familiar way to play” without changing the core gameplay.

“WASD is the most familiar control scheme for PC games today, and we believe this option will make League more intuitive for those coming from other projects,” explained Riot.

Full implementation and balance tests

The new control scheme will first appear in the game’s public beta, where it will undergo “extensive testing.” Riot emphasizes that it’s important to maintain a competitive balance between the classic and new style of controls.

The new control scheme will be available in the public beta first, where it will be tested “over a long period of time”.

After the beta phase, WASD controls are planned to be added to regular matches, and then to ranked and cybersport competitions.

Changes to the game after almost 16 years

League of Legends was released in October 2009 and has since grown into one of the most popular cyber sports disciplines, but has also gained a reputation for being difficult for newcomers.

Riot believes the addition of WASDs could lower the threshold for entry. The company also noted that this is just the first of “long-term initiatives to shape the future of League.”

Riot also said it’s the first of “long-term initiatives to shape the future of League.
