Perplexity has unveiled the Comet browser with AI assistant, but there’s a nuance to it

The Perplexity AI company has announced its own browser called Comet – with an integrated AI assistant capable of summarizing content on websites, automatically filling out forms, placing orders, and handling mail and calendar. However, despite social media claims of free access, at launch the browser can only be used with a $200-per-month Perplexity Max subscription.

Smart Browser with Autopilot

Comet is positioned as a new “browser agent” format in which artificial intelligence doesn’t just answer questions, but helps the user take action on the web. The built-in assistant analyzes the content of web pages, shortens text and displays the gist in a sidebar. It can automatically fill out online forms, initiate orders and reservations, and pull data from Gmail and Google Calendar, suggesting actions based on the information.

Other features include a built-in ad blocker and privacy protection. The developers emphasize that all actions are performed locally, without transferring personal data to cloud storage, which is especially important in the face of the growing use of AI services.

For Max subscribers only

Despite widespread media and social media publicity, Comet is not yet publicly available. It can only be used by Perplexity Max subscribers, which includes priority access to all experimental features, unlimited support, and full integration with the Perplexity platform. The subscription costs $200 per month.

A waiting list is open for other users – it’s free to sign up, but actual access to the browser will come later. There is no information about the launch of the free or reduced version yet.

Perspective and criticism

Comet has become part of Perplexity’s strategy to compete with major search engines and browsers. The company aims to reimagine interaction with the internet by turning it into an AI-driven environment. The project is actively funded by Nvidia, SoftBank, the Jeff Bezos Foundation and other investors. Perplexity’s market valuation has already surpassed $14 billion and its monthly audience has reached 30 million users.

At the same time, Perplexity is facing criticism from major media holdings including The Wall Street Journal, News Corp and Forbes, who accuse the company of using their content without a license. In response, Perplexity has begun developing partnership programs with publishers, offering reward models for the use of content.

So Comet is a technically advanced next-generation browser with AI integration and a focus on automation, but its use at launch is only available to a limited number of users with paid subscriptions.
