Apple may split the iPhone 18 launch into two phases, with the Pro and foldable coming out first

Apple is still just getting its iPhone 17 lineup ready for a fall announcement, but insiders are already revealing details about the next generation. In 2026, the company is rumored to change its usual iPhone launch schedule and split the iPhone 18’s release into two phases.
New approach to iPhone 18 launch: flagships first and fold
According to The Information’s sources, Apple will forgo a single September release for the entire lineup for the first time in 2026. Instead, the company will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, the all-new slim iPhone 18 Air, and the first foldable iPhone in the fall of 2026. The base model iPhone 18 and budget iPhone 18e won’t arrive until spring 2027.
The move will reduce the strain on the production chain, especially as some capacity is moved from China to India. Distributed production of smartphones will simplify logistics, reduce the need for peak hiring and optimize the work of contractors.

What’s known about the iPhone 18 models
The flagship iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are expected to get a Face ID scanner under the display – this will get rid of the Dynamic Island notch, leaving only the front camera. The iPhone 18 Air will be compact and slim, positioning it as a stylish alternative for minimalist fans.
The most interesting new feature is the foldable iPhone. According to rumors, it’ll be in a “book” format and will have a 5.5-inch external screen and a 7.8-inch internal display. To increase reliability, Apple will use a liquid metal hinge that will minimize screen creasing. The device will be just 4.5mm thick when unfolded.
The features include a side-mounted Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID, a titanium body, a dual camera, and a price tag of around $2,000. This could be the most expensive iPhone ever. Advanced AI features and iOS optimizations are also expected, underscoring the device’s focus on the premium segment.
Preparing for a new era of devices
According to analysts, the first foldable iPhone will be a kind of “testbed” before the release of similar devices in the iPad and MacBook lines. Apple has traditionally been slow to introduce new form factors, but has relied on perfected technology.
