Huawei is preparing unconventional flagships for 2025

The Chinese tech giant is returning to its previous schedule of launching two flagship series per year. Instead of the usual P-series focused on mobile photography, the Pura range is now being released. However, the release of the new Pura 80 models, previously expected in the first quarter, has been delayed. Rumors suggest the smartphones may not arrive until summer, in June or July, though some insiders suggest Huawei may abandon the lineup altogether in 2025.
Some insiders have speculated that Huawei may abandon the lineup altogether in 2025.
Pura 80: powerful camera and energy-efficient chip
The Pura 80 lineup will get an updated Kirin processor, redesigned with a focus on reducing power consumption. As before, the series retains its focus on mobile photography. One of the major improvements will be a 1-inch camera sensor, which will ensure high quality low-light shots.

Additionally, the smartphone series will feature a second lens with a variable aperture, allowing you to flexibly adjust the aperture size for different shooting conditions. Not only the main camera, but also the ultra-wide-angle camera.

The return of the Mate with an unexpected twist
Huawei’s second annual flagship lineup is the Mate devices, traditionally released in the fourth quarter. Here too, the company is expecting a change: according to a leak from @DirectorShiGuan, the Mate 80 series will offer users two compact smartphones. One will get a 6.3-inch screen, while the other will have a 6.5-inch screen. The full-size flagship will remain with a 6.7-inch OLED display.
In comparison, last year’s base model, the Mate 70, also had a 6.7-inch screen, while the Pro and RS Ultimate Design versions offered 6.9-inch panels. Thus, in 2025, Huawei will bet on affordable compact flagships with “professional” stuffing.

The flat screen is the new standard for the entire Mate lineup
Another important feature is the unification of screens. In 2024, only the Mate 70 had a flat display, while the Pro and RS versions were equipped with edge-rounded panels. In the new lineup, Huawei will reportedly do away with the curves – all Mate 80 models will feature flat screens.
Last year’s Mate 70 Pro featured an LTPO OLED display with a variable refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. It also used second-generation Kunlun Glass, Huawei’s proprietary glass that provides enhanced drop resistance.
