Toyota reportedly plans to begin production of Subaru’s new three-row electric crossover at its Kentucky plant in 2025 at the same time as a similar vehicle that will be sold under its main brand.

According to people with knowledge of the plans cited by Automotive News, Toyota will begin production of the Subaru EV shortly after it begins producing its own version of the three-row electric SUV, tentatively called the bZ5X.
The name of Subaru’s three-row electric crossover and other details have not yet been released, but the announcement is consistent with Subaru’s May announcement that it plans to produce four battery-powered crossovers by 2026.
Toyota is converting its 9 million-square-foot Georgetown assembly plant to produce two EVs as part of a $461 million investment. The plant currently produces the Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and Lexus ES, as well as four- and six-cylinder engines.

Like the Toyota bZ5X, Subaru’s version is expected to get its batteries from Toyota’s under-construction plant in Liberty, North Carolina, which is scheduled to begin production in 2025.

The world’s largest automaker announced a $5.9 billion investment in a battery plant being built in North Carolina that will have six battery lines: four for hybrid vehicles and two for electric vehicles.
Since final assembly and battery production will take place in North America, both vehicles will likely qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act. Currently, neither the Toyota bZ4X nor the Subaru Solterra is eligible for such a benefit.

The joint development and production strategy allows Subaru to get a larger EV, and its U.S. assembly plant in Lafayette, Indiana — to operate at top speed. That plant assembles the Ascent, Outback and Crosstrek crossovers with an internal combustion engine and the Legacy sedan.

This strategy is reminiscent of a previous collaboration between the two Japanese automakers to launch the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra electric SUVs in 2022. Toyota assembles both vehicles at its Motomachi plant near its headquarters in Aichi, Japan.
