Apple is developing a built-in modem for future iPhones

Apple has unveiled its first proprietary cellular modem, the C1, which debuted alongside the iPhone 16e. While the company didn’t reveal all the technical details, according to Mark Gurman (Bloomberg)Apple plans to integrate the modem into the iPhone’s main processor in the future.

Integrating the modem into the processor will reduce power consumption and cost of devices. However, according to Gurman, Apple is still testing the C2 and C3 modems, which will come out in the coming years without integration into the chipset. A fully integrated modem won’t appear until 2028 at the earliest.

The maker is already calling the C1 “the most power-efficient modem in iPhone history”, though specific numbers were not disclosed.
