The best movies of 2024: from Substance to Puzzle

The past year was remembered by many not only for specific events, but also for the movies that were released. Among the huge number of movies, there were a lot of ordinary or even passable, there was something that disappointed the audience. But there were also such movies or even cartoons that impressed everyone (in a pleasant sense of the word). And that’s why at the end of the past year it’s worth remembering the highlights of the cinematography. Let’s go!

Substance

We’ll probably start with this movie, which came out not too long ago. The picture itself turned out to be relatively chamber-like. Despite the fact that there were plenty of actors, you don’t really notice anyone except the main character (or two main characters?).

A scary, tense, beautiful, in places hyperbolized and going so far into sci-fi that it becomes scary. The picture is top notch, the acting by Demi Moore and Margaret Quolli is superb without a doubt. And the further the movie goes, the more creepy and unpleasant scenes await the audience. Which is more unpleasant – the separation or what happens to the older version – is a difficult question. But it is definitely recommended for viewing

Heretic

Another novelty of the outgoing year, which was released not so long ago. We’re all used to seeing Hugh Grant as a fun, romantic character. But what do you think of his transformation into a philosopher who’s gone mad? In my opinion, this is the picture, which is definitely worth watching, especially if you like to think about movies, to plunge into their dark and mysterious atmosphere.

The movie is about a maniac who promotes his idea of iterating one religion to another. Hugh Grant is not reincarnated as some madman in the usual sense, even his trademark smirk finds a place in this movie. However, things are more complicated than they may seem at first glance. Studio A24, who made this movie, have long distinguished themselves with their unusual take on the horror genre. What is worth their “Solstice”. No mysticism, just people who are sometimes scarier than anything paranormal around them.

Dune: Part Two

The sequel to the acclaimed movie based on Frank Herbert’s books shot even stronger than the first installment. And many viewers recognize that the sequel was much better and more interesting. With a stellar cast, great music and equally great visuals, all combined with a story that’s a fairy tale for fans of good sci-fi.

Like many such global movies everything is brought together here – conspiracies and political games, friendship, love, family, faith and more. It’s a fundamental and expansive work that you can think about a lot after watching it. In order to understand everything that is happening, of course it is better to read the original. And of course the movie is recommended to watch, especially for those who love quality fiction.

The Fall of Empires

The movie is set during the American Civil War. Details aren’t particularly specified, but civil wars don’t usually need much reason to happen. The main action, however, is centered on the journalists. It’s an interesting look at what’s going on, but at the same time it’s pretty chilling.

The movie will appeal to those who like disaster movies, who want to stare intensely at the picture on the screen from splash screen to end credits, who want to watch war journalists. It can not be called a classic representative of its genre, especially if we compare it with “Skyscraper” or even with “2012”. But it’s definitely worth watching.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

A sequel after 36 years, so the fourth installment of The Matrix wasn’t even close to breathing. And it came out to be the kind of sequel that maybe no one was expecting, but that a lot of people loved. Most importantly, there’s no change of director, and Michael Keaton (who played the character in the first movie) is back as Beetlejuice himself.

As is often the case, the second installment is not only about the characters from the original, but also about their children, who are too curious to listen to their parents’ requests and therefore jump on the same rake with great pleasure. To make it more interesting to follow what’s happening on the screen, we advise you to familiarize yourself with the first part, or even better to watch Part 1 and Part 2 one after another, while the impressions will be fresh.

The Contenders

A sports romance movie about three tennis players who have a rather complicated relationship. For a long time now, drama personal and sports in movies meet and go together, and it’s a good, interesting and intriguing combination. Such a genre has become especially popular in the last year or two.

The picture is beautiful, the music is also very cool, and overall the movie was interesting, at least for a one-time viewing. The plot constantly jumps from real narrative to flashbacks and back again, so that only by the end of the movie do you get a full understanding of what’s really going on between the characters.

Deadpool and Wolverine

There it is, a breath of fresh air in superheroics. Of course this movie is good, how could it be otherwise? But it’s good not so much because of the plot (although there’s nothing wrong with that either), but because the long-held dreams of fans have finally come true. How many conversations and ideas have there been about seeing Deadpool (now as we know him) back on the same screen as Wolverine?

Many jokes, and good jokes at that, Chris Evans’ appearance (and especially the scene after the credits with him) is a story. All in all, for Marvel fans, this is a really cool movie that’s definitely worth seeing. What will happen next with our couple is a good question. But for now, let’s stop at one movie.

Puzzle 2

The cartoon that everyone was waiting for in the back of their minds, even though there was not even any talk that there would be a sequel after all. The new emotions are great, the explanations that the cartoonists offer for this or that event are also delightful. What is worth the abyss of sarcasm.

The cartoon came out really good. So good that parents will find it just as useful as kids. Both of them will find something interesting and funny for themselves. The way Riley grows up is familiar to many people, but not everyone can understand this process and somehow explain it. So without any doubts take something delicious and run to watch Puzzle 2.
