The SU7’s success as a predecessor

The SU7 sedan, introduced in March 2024 at a starting price of 215,900 yuan (about $29,700), was a commercial hit. By mid-November 2024, more than 100,000 units had been sold, and Xiaomi expects to hit the 130,000 sales mark by the end of the year.

SU7 has been recognized not only by users but also by major figures in the auto industry. Ford CEO Jim Farley, for example, praised the car, noting its quality.

YU7 against the competition

The YU7 is entering China’s electric SUV market, where it will have to compete with models like the Tesla Model Y, which costs from 249,900 yuan. Xiaomi is likely to set a close price point to compete successfully.

Despite revealing specs during the certification process, Xiaomi remains intrigued. Lei Jun said the launch is scheduled for June-July 2025. The extra time allows the company to conduct longer quality testing.

Xiaomi in the tech race

Xiaomi’s progress in electric cars stands out from other tech giants. Apple has yet to unveil its car, while Sony’s project in collaboration with Honda (Afeela EV) is still in the development stage.

Xiaomi has already made visible progress with partnerships with CATL for batteries and BAIC for car manufacturing.

Calls for Xiaomi

Competition in China’s EV market remains intense. In addition to Tesla, Xiaomi faces brands such as BYD and Nio, which offer powerful electric SUVs.

The key success factor will be the price of the YU7. Xiaomi is known for its aggressive pricing strategy in the smartphone segment, but electric vehicles require significant investment, and achieving a competitive price with high quality will be a major challenge.

The YU7’s price will be the key to success.
