Users of Yandex Maps and Yandex Navigator have discovered a new interesting feature — refining geo-positioning using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

To use the feature, you need to update the Maps and Navigator apps to the latest version, and turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your device.

Yandex apps are supposedly using signal strength measurements from nearby Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cell tower locations to determine a smartphone’s relative location. This innovation is particularly relevant in Moscow, which has been experiencing problems with GPS since early May. This creates inconveniences for cabs, carsharing and kicksharing. Yandex press-service representatives confirmed Rozetked that they are working on improving geopositioning.
