Michael Schumacher’s last Ferrari F1 car to go to auction

Michael Schumacher remains one of Formula One’s most successful drivers, and he achieved his greatest fame with Ferrari in the early 2000s. The car, which was the final chapter of his Ferrari career, will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s on Nov. 14.

Ferrari 248 F1: Schumacher’s last race car

The car in question is the 2006 Ferrari 248 F1, Schumacher’s last car at Ferrari, which he ended his career with the team driving in 2006. Although he failed to win another title, his achievements that season were significant, with five wins and three poles, including the final of his career. It was on chassis number 254, which will be auctioned off, that Schumacher won his final pole and victory.

The 2006 season was a landmark season for Formula One, when the championship switched from 3.0-liter V10 engines to 2.4-liter V8s. Ferrari was hoping for a successful renewal to bounce back after a disappointing 2005, when the championship titles went to Fernando Alonso and Renault. It was the first lost championship for Ferrari since 2000, which interrupted the dominance of the team and Schumacher.

The achievements of the Ferrari 248 F1 and the end of Schumacher’s career

Although the Ferrari 248 F1 failed to beat Renault in the championship race, the car was still far more competitive than the 2005 model. Schumacher took victories at the San Marino, European, US, French, and German Grands Prix, where his latest win took place, and it was particularly significant as it took place on his home soil.

Schumacher’s career has been a long one.

The 248 F1 has increased from 730bhp to 758bhp by the end of the season thanks to race improvements. With this car, Schumacher also surpassed Ayrton Senna’s pole record – a record later broken by Lewis Hamilton. Chassis 254 helped Schumacher finish second at three rounds and set four fastest laps.

Historical value of Chassis 254

After leaving Ferrari in 2006, Schumacher returned to Formula One in 2010 with the Mercedes-Benz AMG team, but was no longer able to add victories to his record. The Ferrari 248 F1 thus came to symbolize the end of his golden era in racing. Chassis 254 is also linked to another Formula 1 champion: it was the chassis tested in January 2007 by Kimi Raikkonen, who would go on to win the title that year and Ferrari the Constructors’ Cup, the latter for the time being.

RM Sotheby’s has not yet revealed the estimated price at auction, but for comparison’s sake, another Ferrari Schumacher car from the 2003 season sold for $14.8 million at auction in 2022.
