AltPhone – a new Russian alternative to Android and iOS

The development of Russia’s AltPhone mobile OS, which will be a competitor to Android and iOS, will require an investment of several hundred million rubles, according to Dmitry Komissarov, co-founder of venture capital fund Strigo Capital. Komissarov emphasized that this amount is significantly less than the costs that would be required to create an OS from scratch without using open source code.

It should be noted that Russian company Bazalt SPO is responsible for the development of AltPhone, which has already registered the AltPhone trademark and confirmed that the OS will be based on the Linux kernel and software modules from the independent repository of the Sisyphus project. “Bazalt SPO” is actively cooperating with domestic manufacturers of mobile devices, but the names of partners have not been disclosed yet.

The AltPhone is currently in the initial stages of development, and no exact release date has been set yet.

In addition to AltPhone, other mobile operating systems being developed in Russia include Aurora from Open Mobile Platforms, Rosa Mobile from ROSA IT Center, Astra Mobile from Astra Group and KasperskyOS from Kaspersky Lab.

KasperskyOS is also being developed in Russia.
