The past few weeks for OpenAI have generated numerous headlines — and not for the best of reasons. The story didn’t end there: several current and former OpenAI employees, as well as Google DeepMind employees, are now calling out their leading AI companies for oversight, a culture of suppressing criticism and a general lack of transparency.

In the open letter, whistleblowers essentially called for the right to openly criticize AI technologies and the risks associated with them. They wrote that because of the lack of obligation to share information with government agencies and regulators, «current and former employees —are among the few who can hold [these corporations] accountable to the public» and said many of them «fear various forms of retribution» for doing so.

The signatories demanded that cutting-edge AI companies adhere to certain principles, including providing an anonymous process for employees to raise concerns about risks and supporting «a culture of open criticism» as long as trade secrets are protected in the process.
